The Harappan Civilization
Introduction:-
Harappan civilization was a Bronze Age civilization. It was flourished on the bank of Indusriver. So it is called Indus Valley civilation.
Terms :-
– It is named “Harappan civilization” because. Harappa was the first site to be excauated in 1921.
Place:-
Archeologists use the term “Custom” for a group of objects, distinctive in style that are usually found wither a Specific geographical area and period of time. In case of Harappan culture these objects include seals, beads weights, and stone blades and backed bricks were found from Afghanistan, Jammu, Baluchistan (Pakistan) and Gujarat.
Time:-
Early Harappan culture- Before 2600 BCE Mature Harappan culture – 2600 BCE to 1900 BCE
Late Harappan culture – After 1900 BCE.
Harappan Seal:-
Harappan seal is probably unique artefact of the Harappan civilization. Steatite stone makes it. Seal contains the animal motif and signs from a script that remains undeciphered.

2. Subistance Strategies
Mature harappan culture shared certain common elements including subistance strategies.
Dietary practices: – Harappans ate wide range of plants, animal product, fish, wheat, Barly, Lentil chickpea, sesame, Rice, Millets are found from sites of Gujrat.
–Animal bones found at Harappan site as Cattle, Sheep, Goat, Buffalo indicated that these animals were domesticated.
–Bones of wild species such as Boar, Deer, “Gharial” were also find, Bones of fish and fowl also found.

Archaeologists who are specialists in ancient plants remains.

AGRICULTURAL – TECHNOLOGIES
– Terracotta sculpture indicates that Bull was known.
– Archacologists extrapolate from this that oxen were used for ploughing.
– Terracotta model of plough have been found at Cholistan and at Banwali (Haryana).
– Evidence of ploughed field found in Kalibanga. (Rajasthan)
– Trace of Canals found at Harappan sites of Shortughi (Afghanistan)
– Water reservoirs found in Dholavira (Gujarat) may have been used to storage water for agriculture.
